Mr. Gregory Marcus
American Bureau of Information
542 West 16th Street
Tempe, Arizona 852816506

Dear Mr. Marcus:

Please find enclosed reviews of the Credit Survival Guide and Instructors Manual per our earlier conversation. As I indicated at that time I would have practitioners, in addition to staff from the Department of Instructional Support, review the materials. I hope their comments are beneficial to you. Additionally, I am making arrangements for review of the materials by other teachers.

I must inform you, however, that individual schools are responsible for the selection of their own instructional materials and programs. Decisions about the purchase of these materials will be made at the local level. I would therefore recommend that you contact the high schools in the district concerning your materials.

Thank you for your interest in the Chicago Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Adrian D. Beverly

Strengths

  1. Glossary is excellent.

  2. Vocabulary is suitable for high school students.

  3. Print size makes text readable.

  4. Layout of chapters (headings and subheadings) makes text easy to follow.

  5. Excellent sources of additional information and help.

  6. Information is repeated for reinforcement.

  7. Very detailed and specific.

  8. Covers every aspect of credit with specifics for certain ages and genders.

  9. Part VI provides detailed information for a variety of credit situations.

  10. Would satisfy State of Illinois Consumer Education graduation requirement.

  11. Would be very useful for graduating seniors, especially those in cooperative education programs.

  12. Information is current (i.e. copyright) regarding consumer legal practices.

  13. Authors have a wide range of experience in the field.

  14. Text incorporates many academic disciplines (i.e. math, reading, comprehension, critical thinking, writing, interpretation, listening, etc.).

  15. Provides valuable information for students as well as non-students.

EVALUATION OF
CREDIT SURVIVAL GUIDE

TEXT

Weaknesses

  1. Cover is not durable enough for extended use.

  2. More student exercises and activities are needed at the end of each chapter.

  3. More illustrations (forms, applications, etc.) and graphics are needed.

  4. Pictures in the book do not depict characteristics of our pluralistic society.

EVALUATION OF
CREDIT SURVIVAL GUIDE

INSTRUCTOR'S MANUAL

Strengths

  1. Easy to follow.

  2. Tests/quizzes can easily be photocopied.

  3. The chapters are designed to help the teacher immediately identify what the key objectives are.

  4. Optional exercises provide "real world" activities.

  5. Endofchapter questions are challenging and thought provoking.

  6. Chapter reviews could also be photocopied for students' use as a "review" or study guide.

  7. Provides opportunities for student self-evaluation.

EVALUATION OF
CREDIT SURVIVAL GUIDE

INSTRUCTOR'S MANUAL

Weakness

  1. More studentoriented. handson activities are needed. Examples of credit applications reading credit reports, figuring interest, etc. could be included. Blank forms that can be duplicated would be helpful.

  2. Should provide examples of letters to credit card companies, credit bureaus, etc. to use as models.

  3. Suggested field trips and videos would be helpful.

  4. Should include suggested time elements for each part.

  5. Does not include adequate enrichment and assessment materials.

**Publishers Note**

In response to the evaluation, on July 10, 1995, Chicago Public Schools was presented with the Resource Kit for the Credit Survival Guide. The Resource Kit was designed to address many of the issues raised in the evaluation, and supports the Instructors Manual with "real life" teaching & learning tools.

Like the Instructors Manual, the Resource Kit is free of charge with classroom sets of textbook purchases(25 copies).

After the development of the Resource Kit, Chicago Public Schools became the 1st school district in the USA to purchase and teach the Credit Survival Guide.
